Dreaming of becoming a digital nomad and working remotely anywhere you want? Well, now you can, with so many countries around the globe offering incredible digital nomad visas. This is your ultimate guide to the countries that offer digital nomad visas!

Being a digital nomad has many benefits – travel, experiencing different cultures, and working with clients from across the globe. But living in a digital nomad-friendly country can expedite the process of being a productive digital nomad and online entrepreneur.

But I have good news for you! More countries than ever are recognizing the value of digital nomads and are offering special visas just for us. Here are some of the most popular countries offering digital nomad visas right now.

1. Georgia

If you’re looking for an amazing place to visit, you need to check out Georgia (the country, not the state in America!)

From Tbilisi, the capital, to some of the most beautiful mountain villages you can find, this country has so much to offer. The people are friendly, and the food is delicious. What more could you need?

95 different countries can stay in Georgia for 365 days

Georgia is such an appealing option for digital nomads because 95 different countries can get visa-free access to Georgia for one year.

But make sure to do your research and double-check the visa requirements before booking your ticket, as you may need proof of documents before touchdown.

Pro tip: be sure to visit Tbilisi, the capital, Batumi, by the beach, and the mountain regions bordering Russia. They are all incredible and unique in their own way.

Open a bank account in one day

It’s completely possible to open a bank account in just one day as a foreigner. I personally opened two Georgian bank accounts, each taking less than an hour.

You will need to bring your passport (and a W8 form if you’re American) and walk into the bank to get an appointment. There may be a long wait time, so expect to wait between 20 minutes to one hour.

I opened accounts at both Bank of Georgia and TBC, however, I do have a recommendation for which bank is best for foreigners. Soon to come in a future blog post!

Croatia is a stunning country – there’s so much to do and see (and eat)!

From the gorgeous views and historic culture to the delicious food and friendly people, it’s no surprise that it’s become one of the top holiday destinations in Europe.

Low cost of living

Croatia is a top spot for digital nomads and freelancers, so you’ll find loads of fellow expats and nomads living there. It’s got great conditions, a low cost of living, and an awesome quality of life – it’s no wonder why so many people are heading there!

You can stay for one year on the digital nomad visa 

With their digital nomad visa, you can stay in the country for up to 12 months, and you can renew your visa further if you want to stay longer. All you have to do is complete the application process (call your local Croatian embassy if you have further questions) and upload the necessary documents.

Once you have your visa sorted, you can move to Croatia and enjoy the amazing benefits the country has to offer – beautiful nature, delicious cuisine, astonishing history, and a great climate.

3. Spain

Spain is an amazing country to both visit and live in. From the sunny beaches of the Costa del Sol, to the majestic mountains of the Pyrenees, there’s something for everyone. Not only that, but the culture and history are incredible – you can explore ancient cities like Madrid, Barcelona, and Seville, and sample some delicious cuisine. 

New digital nomad visa valid for up to 12 months

Spain just launched a new digital nomad visa – and it’s open to people from all countries, lasting anywhere from 1 to 12 months. 

Plus, you can apply for it from any Spanish consulate around the world. So if you’ve been dreaming of living, working, and travelling in Spain, now’s your chance.

The eligibility criteria for Spain’s Digital Nomad Visa for non-EU citizens include:

• Must be employed by a non-Spanish company or have clients outside Spain
• Worldwide income with at most 20% earned from Spanish companies or sources
• Must not have had a residency in Spain in the past five years
• Must have been working remotely for at least one year
• Clean criminal record and have not been previously prohibited entry to Spain
• Must have private health insurance coverage that is valid throughout the entire stay in Spain
• Show proof of accommodation of where you will live during your time in Spain

Income Requirements 

To apply for the Spanish digital nomad visa, you’ll need to show that you make at least €2,334/month or €28,000/year (these amounts are always subject to change in the future, so keep an eye out!). 

You’ll also need to prove that you have a bank account in Spain, a valid travel insurance policy that covers €30,000 (grab my favourite nomad insurance here) and your passport with your current address. 

It’s a good idea to keep a copy of your bank statements to show that you have enough funds to support yourself during your stay. 

4. Italy

From the ancient ruins of Rome to the stunning beaches of Sicily, Italy is a country that’s got something for everyone. 

But there’s more to the country than just tourist attractions. For instance, you’ve got the snow-capped Alps in the north and the rolling hills of Tuscany in the south. And let’s not forget about the food!

Plus, there are plenty of co-working spaces available in cities across the country, like WeWork or Selina, where you can get your work done and meet other like-minded digital nomads. 

5. Estonia

Estonia is a small country located in the Baltic Sea region of Northern Europe – and it’s a beautiful place to explore. It’s got its own unique culture, traditions, and language, and a rich history that dates back to the Stone Age. 

Estonia has a thriving digital economy in recent years and is one of the most environmentally friendly countries in the world. And if you’re lucky, you can even catch a glimpse of the northern lights! 

E-residency

The Estonian e-residency program might not be for everyone, but if you’re looking for a less expensive alternative to your home country, it’s definitely worth considering.

With Estonian e-residency, you can become an e-resident and manage all your documents and process through the online portal. With this e-residency program, any income taxed abroad will not be taxed in Estonia. You can also set up your business and run it remotely from Estonia. 

Keep in mind that through this process you won’t become an Estonian or EU citizen. 

Type D Visa

If you are looking to stay longer in Estonia, the type D visa will be what you need. With this visa, you can stay in Estonia for 365 consecutive days. The requirements to get a D visa include:

• Valid passport
• Completed and signed the application form 
• Passport-sized photos
• Valid health insurance policy covering expenses due to illness or injury during the period of validity of the visa
• Documents indicating the purpose of the journey or documents proving that applicant is going to study in Estonia
• Proof of financial means. Must prove that you have sufficient financial means according to the purpose of the stay
• Biometric data – 10 fingerprints of the applicant 
• Visa fee of 100 euros, or for children 6-11 years, 40 euros

6. Portugal

From the stunning Azores mountains to the beautiful Algarve beaches, Portugal has something for everyone… including digital nomads!

D7 Visa Program

Although Portugal has had some major changes, and no longer offers their Golden Visa Program, the D7 visa is a great way to stay in Portugal for 90 days every six months. 

It’s a great option for digital nomads, entrepreneurs and anyone else who wants to stay in Portugal for a longer period of time. 

Benefits of the D7 Visa

The D7 visa enables the respective holder to obtain a residence permit in Portugal over one year, which can then be renewed for successive periods of 2 years and can be converted into a permanent residence permit after 5 years.

The best part? You don’t need a certain income or to be able to speak Portuguese. Portugal is amazing, so I definitely recommend checking it out if you can! The D7 visa is a great way to do it.

Income Requirements

Single applicants need to generate and provide proof of income of at least €705 per month or €8,460 per year. If you are bringing a spouse with you, you must present a minimum amount of €4 230 per year, for each person. 

For any dependant children you may have, you’ll need to present a minimum of €2 538 per year per child.

7. Bulgaria

Bulgaria is a small country tucked away in Southeast Europe, with Romania to the north, Serbia and North Macedonia to the west, Greece and Turkey to the south, and the Black Sea to the east. It’s got a lot of history and culture, plus a unique combination of Eastern European and Mediterranean vibes.

A year-long multiple-entry visa is a great option for foreign citizens who want to stay in Bulgaria for more than 90 days, but less than 180 days per year. 

This visa is valid for all of Bulgaria and you don’t need to apply for a residence permit as long as you don’t stay for more than 90 days within a 180-day period.

Type D Visa

The Type D visa is a long-term visa that allows its holders to enter Bulgaria multiple times. It is issued for either 6 months or 12 months and is an essential requirement to be considered for a Bulgarian residence permit.

6-Month Type D Visa

This visa is granted to applicants who wish to enter the country and settle for a long period/establish permanent residency.

The time required for the Bulgarian D visa to be issued is between one to two months.

This visa type could be a good option for you if you are looking to settle or obtain residency in Bulgaria… which may be a good idea if you are looking to optimize your tax situation, as Bulgaria is very tax friendly. 

8. Colombia

From the hustle and bustle of Bogotá, Medellín, and Cali, to the gorgeous Caribbean beaches of San Andrés and Cartagena, there’s something for everyone in Colombia.

And let’s not forget the delicious food – the arepas, empanadas, tamales, and chicharrones – all made with fresh, local ingredients – what more could a digital nomad want?!

Digital nomad visa for one year, but can be extended to two years

Getting a visa for Colombia as a digital nomad is super easy – you can even extend it for two years if you want. 

All you need is a return ticket and a temporary address in Colombia. You can get one of those easily enough from Airbnb or Homestay – just rent a room for a few months and you’re good to go. 

Just remember, the visa is only valid for one year!

90-day visa option 

Staying in Colombia for 90 days without a visa is a great opportunity for digital nomads. Just be sure to leave the country before your 90-day visa is finished, and don’t overstay your visa. 

Apply for your visa online

9. Ecuador

From the stunning Andes Mountains to the lush Amazon rainforest, Ecuador is like nowhere else! The culture is so vibrant, with a mix of indigenous and Spanish influences, and the food is delicious. 

Two-year digital nomad visa

The country’s digital nomad visa is one of the best out there, so you can live in Ecuador and travel around South America with ease. It’s a great option if you want to base yourself in one place and not do too much travelling.

Here’s what you will need when applying for Ecuador’s digital nomad visa:

• A completed visa application form
• A valid passport
• Two passport-sized photos
• Digital nomad health insurance
• A certificate that you don’t have a criminal record in your home country or country of residence 
• Proof you make at least $1350 USD per month, which is three times the local salary 

Tax benefits

Even for those with temporary residence or a digital nomad visa in Ecuador, money earned outside the country is not taxed. Only money earned within Ecuador is eligible for income tax. 

However, you will not need to worry about this, as the digital nomad visa does not allow you to earn money within the country.

As a digital nomad, you are liable for Ecuador-sourced income, defined as anything derived from activities conducted in Ecuador.

General information about Ecuador’s taxes is below:

• The income tax rate is progressive – 5% to 35%. The first $11,310 of an individual’s income is not taxed
• The sales tax rate is 12%

10. Mexico

Mexico is a place full of culture and history – and it’s bursting with vibrant colours, beautiful beaches, and delicious food. From the Aztec and Mayan ruins to the colonial cities, Mexico has something for everyone. 

Whether you want culture, adventure, relaxation, or all of the above, Mexico will not disappoint on your next digital nomad adventure!

One-year digital nomad visa

Did you know that you can stay in Mexico for up to a year with a digital nomad visa? 

In order to do so, you will need to show that you can support yourself financially during your stay. You can even combine the digital nomad visa with a tourist visa, but you’ll need to prove that you’ll be leaving the country at the end of your stay. 

Income Requirements

To apply for the digital nomad visa, you must have proof of a bank balance of $43,000 for the last twelve months or an income of $2,595 USD per month for the last six months. If you are bringing a dependant this amount will increase.

11. Turkey

I’m always amazed when I visit Turkey – it’s definitely one of my favourite countries. From its vibrant culture and ancient history to its stunning landscape and world-class beaches, there’s something for everyone. 

I’ve been lucky enough to visit Turkey a few times and I’m always blown away by its beauty. If you’re looking for a unique and exciting travel destination, Turkey may very well be the destination for you. 

You can get a visa on arrival

Heading to Turkey? You can get a visa on arrival, but it’s best to check the visa regulations for your country first – countries like Brazil, China, Canada, America, India, Mexico and many others require a visa before arrival. 

The price can range from free to a few hundred dollars. Be sure to check their website to see if you need a visa before visiting. 

Apply for a Residence Permit for a long-term stay

If you’re planning on a longer stay, you can apply for a residence permit. This process will take a few months but is ideal if you fall in love with Turkey and end up wanting to stay longer than your visa permits. Find more information on the Turkey residency process here.

12. Costa Rica

Plus, the country is incredibly safe, so it’s a great spot for solo travellers, and, the food is to die for! From classic dishes like gallo pinto to modern fusion cuisine, there are plenty of options to choose from. 

Digital nomad visa 

The Costa Rica digital nomad visa is a great choice for digital nomads, it’s super simple to set up and it’s valid for an entire year, and can even be extended further if desired.

You can either apply before you arrive or when you’re already in the country, just make sure you meet the requirements and show that you have enough funds to support yourself. 

To apply, you must:

• Work for a foreign company, own a business or work as a freelancer with companies outside of Costa Rica
• Have a monthly income of at least $3,000 USD (if you’re applying for a family, it must be $4000 USD per month)
• Have health insurance that covers you and your family (I highly recommend Safety Wing)

All in all, getting the digital nomad visa is a great option if you’re looking to enjoy your time in Costa Rica.

Affordable living costs

If you’re a digital nomad looking for a place to call home, you’ll want to make sure you check out Costa Rica. It’s got it all! Tropical weather, great quality of life, and a really high standard of living – plus it’s affordable too. So why not give it a go? Costa Rica should definitely be on your list of possibilities.

In Costa Rica, a single person can live on between $1,600 and $2,000 a month. While you can opt to spend less, this is the average per person.
